A limpkin, a new dahlia, and Muscovy babies

I always enjoy seeing limpkins in the backyard as long as they don't have anything to say.  They give out screeches that make you think someone is being murdered!  But they are interesting birds to see so I'm happy when they come but have nothing to say.  That was the case today, so we had a nice visit!

Relaxing quietly by the water's edge.

The Cezanne dahlia has bloomed fully now.  It is a beautiful bright yellow and a joy to see.  I've been watching for this moment for weeks now!

Ta-daa!

Today also brought the happy event of the appearance of new Muscovy duck babies in the backyard.  One of our regular females brought two babies to eat today.  She probably had a lot more, but the group has been whittled down to two, which is what usually happens as they have so many predators.  Hopefully these two little ones will be around until they grow up.

Little Muscovies after eating.

Mom staked out a safe place by the pool pump to rest with the kids.

The rest of the backyard Muscovy family concentrated on eating dinner, except for one girl who decided to rest on the bird bath to avoid the attentions of the males below.

Sometimes the boys are just too much to take!  It's quiet here.

As for the Monarch caterpillars, most are now in the enclosure.  I put eight in there but can only see six of them.  Sometimes they are just hard to find.  Some big storms are predicted so I needed to get them safely off the milkweed plants in the patio and onto the ones in the enclosure.  Rather than try to coax one of them onto a new plant, I just cut off the branch he was eating and put it in a cup of water in the enclosure.  He can move onto the plants in the pots in the enclosure whenever he is ready.

He and his branch got moved to safety in a cup.

Enjoying the fresh leaves and the safety of the enclosure.
